Toyota Luncheon
Apparently, companies in Indonesia have started to discover the potential of the blogosphere. Last Wednesday afternoon (20-Feb-08), several prominent bloggers including Ndoro Kakung, Paman Tyo, Unspun, and Media Ide Bajing Loncat were invited to a blogger’s luncheon by Toyota. During the luncheon, Achmad Rizal, Dept. Head of Communication Dept. of Toyota Astra Motor revealed their plan to launch the new Corolla Altis by February 28, 2008.
Rizal (left photo) said that his company has realized the importance of bloggers to support their whole marketing campaign. Not to mention that Toyota has tapped e-marketing, both via email and mobile phone. “So now, it’s time for bloggers,” said Rizal. “We have seen the rapid growth of blogs in Indonesia, supported by the continuous development of IT infrastructure in this country. This is why we started to engage bloggers…”
Ndoro Kakung also raised an interesting question during the luncheon. “Blogs have no certain code of conduct or ethics—unlike conventional media. People can write good things about you, but they can write some negative stuff as well. Aren’t you afraid of the risks that might occur?”
“Well, we do understand the risk,” Rizal answered, “but we try to think positive. If there are negative comments about us, we took it as constructive criticism. Therefore we know what we’re lacking of, and we can make some improvements. If we keep on worrying about the risks, we won’t tap the blogosphere until it’s too late. So, we go along…”
The luncheon was of course, showing Toyota’s goodwill to engage bloggers—and the bloggers also had the chance to see (and take pictures) of the new Corolla Altis before it is launched to the public. It’s a good start.
However, Toyota can actually make the event more memorable to bloggers: probably after lunch, there are 3 new Corolla Altis lining up in front of the lobby, and the bloggers can have a ride on it to experience firsthand its unique features.
It’s the experience that counts.
