Maverick Goes 70s at “Maverick Night Fever”

Everybody loves to party, journalists no exceptions! That was obvious from our 2008 media gathering last Thursday. Some 70 journalists from around 35 media companies joined the party at Airman Planet, Sultan Hotel. Dubbed the “Maverick Night Fever”, the event took the theme “disco seventies”. Everybody–our partners and associates–made serious efforts to live up to the theme, donning their wigs, miniskirts, leather boots and flowery shirts, to mention a few of the 70s items on display that night!   It’s always nice to see people enjoy themselves and unwind (at least for a while!) after a tight deadline, stress, or anything that is associated with working as journalists. Visiting with and getting to know fresh faces in a different environment other than work can be a very useful stress relief. A health therapist once said that it’s healthy to make at least a new friend in a month. Nothing can beat a party when it comes to that! Make new friends!  Be part of the fun!  A party is no fun when the very people attending it play no part in it. To get everybody to join, every journalist was invited to take their pictures in the 70s outfit: big sunglasses, flowery shirts, wigs and other 70s paraphernalia. Everybody seemed to be having a great time and many of them grabbed a second chance to don different costumes and pose for different photo angles. On top of an abundance of food and free drinks, there were fun games to entertain guests. The MC duo, Indri and Nadia, who looked glamorous in their 70s gold and silver looks, from head to toe, challenged guests in a guessing game to identify 70s songs and to dance in the 70s style. Joko of rileks.com and his partner of the night, Dewi, a Maverick associate, turned the dance floor hot with their sensual movements. In a matter of minutes the two choreographed a new dance that combined disco with 70s movements. Other dancers helped make the night a “Maverick Night Fever”!   The lucky journalist that night was Muchlison of Gatra, who won the grand prize: an iPOD! Everybody looked happy and that was all that mattered. We were grateful for the media support in the six years of doing business. Spending a happy time together was one way to keep our good relationship with the journalists!

2008 Maverick “Click of The Year” goes to…

In Maverick, we’re not only serious about blogging; we also have lots of fun with it! :D

Click of The Week has become our new racing game, where Maverick kids compete to spot journalists blogs over the net and have it being reviewed in our blog. Each year, during Maverick’s Media Gathering, we crowned a journalist as the recipient of our Click of The Year Award.

Judged by the Mavericks (cat-fight involved), this award is given to the most outstanding journalist blog from our 2008 Click of The Week list, and convey these following qualities: (more…)

An Intern: Encountering Maverick’s CSL session

One week into my stint as an ITB intern at Maverick I received an invitation to sit in at a lecture that is part of the PR firm’s Corporate Social leadership (CSL) program. The program aims to help non-profit organizations conduct their own PR programs by running them through a 10-month course on public relations and communications skills.

The lecture was to be about online PR and presentation skills so I had two expectations. Firstly, I hoped to learn how to use what’s happening on the Net and online to help me communicate more efficiently. Secondly, I could benefit from skills that would enhance my presentations.

I was not disappointed.

On of the useful things I learned from the online PR session was about street creds. (more…)

Up and Away for the Gauge Away Day!

Last Saturday, the Gauge team had an Away Day at Desa Gumati, Bogor. As a new addition to the staff, this was a new experience for me. I learned that Away Day is Maverick’s way to get away from the office and align our thoughts together for the future of the company, and of Gauge Media Monitoring division in this particular instance.

The day started off well, clear blue sky, with no traffic whatsoever. After donning our uniform Gauge t-shirts for the day (yay, free goodies!), we were ready to go. The drive from the office to Desa Gumati was filled with karaoke-ing cheesy old Indonesian pop songs that the bus had provided for us (thank you Mr. Bus Driver!) and as usual, talking while munching away the miles.

Maverick-Gauge Tracker of the Year 2007

Maverick started the tradition of “Maverick of the year” two years ago. This year, on Gauge Media Tracking Division’s own Away Day, we announced the very first Tracker of the Year 2007. Similar with the mechanism for Maverick of the year, we’d ask the media trackers, editors and associates to nominate the trackers for the award, which comes with a modest plaque and Rp5 million cash prize.

clip_image002[6]The Tracker of the Year 2007 is Rina Murni. She was chosen for demonstrating a level of

performance that all the media trackers can aspire to. It was a hard decision to make since we have a solid group of media trackers with excellent teamwork. However, Rina has shown consistent work quality, high-level skills and professionalism that are essential to a media tracker.

Rina started working for Gauge in February 2007 and like the usual occurrence in Maverick, she hit the ground running handling some of the more complicated accounts.

The Boot Camp Story

How can you tell if an organization is serious about developing its employees? For consultancies like Maverick, people is a tremendously important asset for the company. Consultancy is a people business, and the growth of a company is significantly determined by the quality of its people.

At Maverick, we consider developing our employees a priority. Earlier this year we launched a ‘training passport’, which essentially consists of compulsory training materials for all of our consultants. These training materials are divided into periods, i.e. for entry-level consultants, they are required to undertake twelve training sessions in the first three months of joining Maverick.

Away Day 2008 80a

Indri, leading her team in the tug of war game during our Away Day

Maverick started this tradition last year during our Away Day. Each year we’d ask associates to nominate their peers for the Maverick of the Year award, which carries with it a modest plaque and Rp10 million prize money.

This year, at our Away Day in Ancol over the weekend, we announced the Maverick of the Year 2007, and it was Indri Puspitasari Rosid. The Maverick of the Year is chosen for demonstrating to the partners and their peers that they have pushed themselves to a new level of performance.

Bridging Dialogue Through Media Handling Skill

What is the Indonesian media? How do you handle this ‘creature’ properly? How should you react when an uninvited journalist comes to your press conference demanding interviews? What should you do when ‘a journalist’ asked for money?

Those are some of the burning questions raised by our NGO partners during our last Corporate Social Leadership (CSL) training on Media Handling Skills (06-Feb-2008).
