Asep Setiawan writes about many things in his blog “Jurnal Inspirasional Asep Setiawan”.He writes about the World Wide Web because of his experience of leading Kompas Cyber Media in 1999-2000. He also writes about his journalism adventures, his family and education for his children, his spiritual journey, and stories that inspire him.

From all his postings, however, I enjoy most those that bring up little matters that we don’t usually pay attention to, like the Gambir shoe shiner.

It positioned itself apart from other sports magazine by covering news on athletes outside their comfort zone, the field. SportWeek will share stories about the daily lives of famous athletes and public figures in sports industry.

Happy 25th Anniversary The Jakarta Post!

On April 25^th, the leading English-language newspaper in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post (TJP), celebrated its 25 years of existence. The paper that was first launched on 25 April 1983 is owned by PT Bina Media Tenggara, a consortium of competing Indonesian-language newspaper companies, namely Gramedia, Tempo, Suara Karya and Sinar Harapan.

Indonesia Business Journal

It’s always good to see a new newspaper being published. Recently we’ve had words that a new economy and business newspaper, titled “Indonesia Business Journal” will be published soon.

The daily, which is available every Monday to Friday, aims at executives, professionals and businessmen. The paper is distributed to corporate leaders, market players, officials and decision makers. It is marketed through media agents and outlets throughout Jabodetabek and other major cities in Indonesia.

Whether you agree with the Indonesian Government’s actions in the Web, or not, you have to give it to Communications and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh.

Last week he was sitting on a couple of potentially explosive issues: the Government’s decision to block YouTube and other social networks because of the Dutch film on Islam called Fitna, and the passage of the Electronic Transaction Law UU ITE).

On a more minor scale, but perhaps more emotional because it is closer to the heart, was the fact that Bloggers were unhappy about Roy Suryo, the President’s technology advisor who has been responsible of a string of comments that bloggers felt were misleading and harmful to the image of bloggers in Indonesia.

So on Monday he called for a dialogue session with some of the more well-known and active bloggers in the country. (more…)

KPI Award: Rewards for Best TV Programs

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) announced the winners of the first KPI Award last Tuesday (19/03). The 2007 KPI Award was established to reward TV stations and producers that have provided the best programs for the public. The Award consists of five categories, namely children’s program, documentary, soap opera (sinetron), investigative news and talk show.

Hopefully, the award will spur our TV stations to begin competing to provide the public with more educative and positive entertainment, rather than a mere ratings fight against each other.

As far as I’m concerned, ratings had resulted in programs that focus on criminality, mysticism and pornography for the public. Yes, the public enjoy such programs, but are these kinds of programs in the public’s best interests?

Andy F. Noya Says Goodbye to the Editor-in-Chief Position

Andy F. Noya is confirmed to leave the Editor-in-Chief position at Metro TV starting May 1st, 2008. However, he is still going to host the highly acclaimed “Kick Andy” talk show and maintain his role as the Corporate Advisor of Media Group.

Bang Andy joined Metro TV in early 2006, replacing Don Bosco Selamun who is now a Commissioner of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).

Who’s going to lead the wind of change? Well, we also heard rumors that Elman Saragih, another member of the Media Group editorial board, has replaced Bang Andy’s position. Can anybody confirm this?

What’s Going On With the Point?

The English daily The Point has temporarily ceased its publication since mid last week. Our source said that the suspension may last for at least a month while the publisher discusses internal matters.

So, what is really happening with The Point? Will we see more of it anytime soon or should we say goodbye?

If anyone knows more info, please share.
