Press Freedom in Doubt

Indo Pos reported on Monday, January 28th, 2008, that Aliansi Jurnalis Indonesia (AJI) is protesting against the decision by the President’s Press and Media Bureau for refusing to issue media passes to a number of journalists. The said the refusal might be because of articles written by the journalists who were denied the passes.

The Jakarta Post’s Abdul Khalik , for instance, was quoted as saying that he suspects he was denied a media pass because of his story about hotel payment mark ups during 2006 ASEAN Conference in Manila.

Books for the Blind

Yayasan Mitra Netra has launched an anthology of poems by Irwan Dwikustanto and his family in January 23rd, 2008. The funds generated from the anthology’s sale will be used to buy one thousand Braille books for the blind.

The anthology comes in a hard-cover format, and is priced at Rp100,000. If you buy a book, it means that you are helping one blind person to get one Braille book.

For those who are interested, please contact Yayasan Mitra Netra Rehabilitation, Education, and Training Manager Riyanti Ekowati at +62-21-7651386 or through fax at +62-21-7655264. Is CAKRAM having a tough start in 2008?

We have just heard the news that CAKRAM magazine has just laid-off five of its employees last Friday (01/25), including two of its editors.

Surprisingly, the management did not inform these employees about the layoff beforehand—and only told them about the decision on Friday without prior notice.

His love affair with blogging started on 31 Dec 2006, when he launched his Blog Adhi Ksp. Before long, this blog became his playground where he can write about various topics that interest him. He shares a pragmatic view of our earthly problems relating to government policy, metropolitan issues, and public facility maintenance, to art, technology and lifestyle. What I like most about this blog is the way Adhi’s able to express his views with confidence, supported with good arguments.

Lativi’s New Name

karni ilyas Some of you might have heard the rumors that Lativi will soon change its name into TVOne. Talks on the issue have already started in a number of mailing lists and community blogs even as news about TVOne looking for presenters is circulating.

“It’s true,” said Karni Ilyas, former News, Sport, and Corporate Communications director of ANTV, last Friday. When we met over dinner at a Chinese restaurant at the JW Marriott Hotel, Pak Karni handed us his new business card, which read “TVOne News & Sport Director. “Lativi has even started to air more sport programs prior to the launching.”

The Cherished Day

additional5 On Wednesday, 23 January 2008, Maverick staffs were given a half-day off to get ready for a special celebration in the evening. Was it Maverick anniversary? A celebration over nailing big account? Or was it a late New Year’s Eve party? Nope, we cherished the day dearest Ong finally got hitched!

Looking dashing in evening gowns and suits, we arrived at 7 p.m. just in time when the party started at Cilantro restaurant in Wisma BNI 46, Central Jakarta. Ong and Felicia looked dazzling and glowing with joy as they greeted some 200 guests that comprised friends, business associates and relatives.

The romantic vibe filled the air with breathtaking city view from the 46th floor, pink decorations, candlelight and smooth jazz. It was a warm and intimate party where bride and groom mingled with the guests amid scrumptious hors d’oeuvers and drinks in the lounge. Closest relatives and friends also took turn to tell funny and heartwarming ‘behind the scene’ stories, while children sang a love song and danced to it. Very cute.

Click of The Week #32: Merry Magdalena

cow Reading through Merry Magdalena’s blog, is like looking at the world through a new pair of eyes. With “Sexual revolution” written as heading on her blog page, it hit me that all Merry’s writings are calculated to send a strong message, especially to female readers. She is so heavily into gender issues that her blog serves as a wake up call for females to stop self pity about their looks but to maximize their potential instead.

“If you are a poor and ignorant female, then you are the most unfortunate human being in this world. Why? Because you become the most vulnerable prey for all the predators in this jungle of life !” Merry wrote in the posting “Females, Poverty and Ignorance”.
